I wanted to create a vegan chocolate protein powder for less. It doesn’t have a preservative, so be careful about adding any liquid extracts.
To make it, you will need to mix the following:
1 cup pea protein powder
1/3 cup of hemp protein powder
1/3 cup of raw cocoa powder
1/3 cup of milled flax seeds*
1/2 tsp of stevia powder**
I obtained all of the ingredients (except the stevia) at my local bulk dried goods store—a Bulk Barn. Make sure you call ahead to see if they have the ingredients you’re looking for. I’ve found different stores in the same chain can carry different products.
And now for a little math to figure out how much protein is in each serving!
First, I weighed the ingredients I used. Then, I calculated the amount of protein and calories in each using the information on Bulk Barn’s website for each item—except the cocoa powder, as this was from a brand called Organic Traditions (also sold at Bulk Barn), and I used the information on the nutrition label for this.
Cup of pea protein—90 grams, 75.6 grams of protein, 378 calories
1/3 cup hemp protein—35 grams, 17.5 grams of protein, 136.5 calories
1/3 cup raw cocoa—32 grams, 9.6 grams of protein, 128 calories
1/3 cup of milled flax seeds—32 grams, 6.4 grams of protein, 156.8 calories
The total of each for the recipe is 189 grams, 109.1, 799.3
And the numbers for each 1/4 cup/25 gram portion are as follows: 14.4 grams of protein, 105.7 calories
This is comparative to the protein powder I used before, which contained 130 calories per 20 grams of protein. In addition to protein, the protein powders contain lots of healthy minerals, and the flax seeds are rich in fiber and omega-3s.
*Do not add the milled flax seeds if you plan to drink this powder on its own with water. The flax seed hulls will make it difficult and unpleasant to drink.
**You may need to adjust this depending on the brand of stevia you use. I used stevia concentrate powder from a brand called Pure-le Natural
